Presentation as a Decision-Making Tool (the 5 elements)

Mirroring Objectives – presenting the values that the presentation will create to my target audience. This is the desired result (as defined by the decision-makers).

Recommendation – a call for action that involves allocation of resources. It also involves risk concerning the way in which your suggestions are linked to the presented goals/objectives.

Laying the assumptions – These are future based assumptions based on supporting information

Supporting Information – factual content, research studies, data, statistics, facts that show how you reached your basic assumptions.

Measurements of success – a series of methods by which the groundwork can continue to be checked after beginning to follow the recommendations, but a good while before all the necessary resources needed to fulfill the recommendations are put into use.

The Persuasion Table

Core Variables in Interpersonal Communications

What are the core variables in interpersonal communications?

Awareness of the following 5 sets and better use of each one of the elements will help us to better understand what makes the person opposite us function. It will help us accommodate ourselves and our message to our target audience.

Explanation       Core Variables
The messenger is more persuasive than the message. Why? Because as human beings we first relate to other human beings and then to messages.  Ethics is “Who am I?” and especially what do others think of me and how do they perceive me? Message        Messenger
80-93% of our messages are transmitted non- verbally, meaning through the elements of  body language. Verbal            Non-verbal
Covert influences more than overt. Why? Because people are persuaded more by conclusions that they reach by themselves. The message should be presented overtly, but should be strengthened covertly by examples, quotes, descriptions, etc. Overt                     Covert
According to studies by Kahanman and Twersky, 95% of our decision making depends on the non-verbal. How can we maximize this fact when we attempt to influence and to persuade others? Analogies, terminologies, frameworks and more. Rational             Irrational
What’s the difference between the two? Information = collecting data, research, numbers, graphs, etc. Knowledge = our ability to use significant and relevant information according to who is standing opposite us. Information  Knowledge

Value Oriented Thinking and Communication

This is a mode that frames every question, communication or action in context of the desired end state (your own as well as other’s).  It is an effective tool in the service of establishing your relevance in the eyes of those whom you wish to influence and in front of whom you present.  It is the foundation in the service of establishing yourself as an ASSET to your key stakeholders and a critical component of “Executive Presence”.

Four Steps:

Value– specific desired end state of the person or group of people you are trying to influence (“influence” = the desired behaviour you wish for them to adopt).

The key is to not confuse an annoying obstacle, a desired course of action or a need for a resource with an actual, time bound and quantifiably measurable end result or end value “they” are actually trying to secure.

obstacles– obstacles (real or perceived) the person you are trying to influence believes they are facing and which is slowing down, or out-right preventing, progress towards one or more end results. This can also represent any resistance you expect to encounter when presenting your recommendations (“?”) in the service of their “!”.

Alternative Solution- the most effective/efficient way of overcoming or completely dissolving one or more obstacles. The symbol represents the uncertainly around the right solution for overcoming obstacles and realizing components of the desired end state. The Question Mark symbol is used because the best way to coming up with a worthwhile solution is to first correctly formulate the question you are trying to answer.

Resources – Time, Energy, Attention, Social Capital, Authority and Money required in order to effectively execute the solution that removes the barrier from the path to the desired end state. It is the last aspect to be considered and should never be seen as an obstacle or a solution.

As most people are predominantly Problem Oriented (pre-occupied with the barriers they are facing), Action Oriented (micro managers) or Resource Oriented (pre-occupied with getting their hands on more resources) – this model can help identify/surfice the the various KPIs that actually make up the desired “End State” they are working towards (frequently a goal sheet or end of period business metrics).
