Boosting Audience Attention

One of the biggest challenges every message deliverer faces in front of an audience is dealing effectively with our limited attention spans as human beings. Researches show that an average person’s ability to dedicate their full attention to us is no longer than 5-7 minutes. So what can we do to boost audience attention? It is best to tackle this challenge on two levels simultaneously:

  1. Body language: changing your voice and intonation, making eye contact and different facial expressions, moving etc.
  2. Attention boosters: anecdotes, jokes, riddles, case studies, personal stories, a surprising statistic, an innovative research, a quote, a question, a video, an intellectual reference – we call all of these attention boosters. Anything that’s a routine breaker or an atmosphere changer. The attention booster does not replace content but is added to it, and it is very important that we prepare it in advance.

What is a powerful opening? Those first 30 seconds – 4 minutes are your “Grace Period”: your time to prove the audience you’re worthy of their time and attention. By using this time wisely, we can increase our chance of capturing our audience’s attention past the opening part, and establish our status as interesting, charismatic speakers and the status of our message as worthwhile.
